A Look Into The Design Process

Hello everyone and thanks for visiting UCSB Racing. We are going into finals week and would like to provide you with some of our accomplishments this quarter:
  • The chassis has had 1" added to the rear that will not effect the wheelbase of the vehicle
  • We will be using a 3-link semi-trailing arm design for the rear suspension
  • Components have been placed in the cockpit to insure proper clearances
  • A fiberglass CVT cover with metal safety band has been designed
  • Wheels and tires have arrived
A very rough sketch of what the rear suspension might look like
Note: We use simplified suspension arms to find proper/ideal suspension geometry

Design Updates

Frame v2.1 (not shown) as been extended by a few inches after drafting wheelbase and track widths over frame v2.0. We have come to the following target values:

In fundraising news, the recent bronze donors have put us over the vehicle build cost.

Two Bronze Donations From Baja Families! West Coast Silicon and Tracie Houska

Big thanks going out to Jonathan Campbell and his father Wayne Campbell at West Coast Silicon for their Bronze donation!

And another one from Dean's mother Tracie Houska who has provided us with a brand new, top of the line Gaged Engineering CVT.

UCSB Racing is officially signed up for SAE Baja Illinois and the big, bad Briggs & Stratton is on its way! TEAM 24

We are currently the only school representing the UC's at this competition and there is also no sign of the CalPolys.

Although we are still fundraising, it is also time for us to start designing components!

Big Thanks to Coastal Excavation and Enerpro

Chad & Genessa Cushman at Coastal Excavation and Frank at Enerpro came though with some generous donations this week. Thank You!

More great people to thank like Diana Wollert, Condor Machining, JAE Racing, and Tencate

Funding assistance is coming from all sides! Big thanks to Diana Wollert, John Owens at Condor Machining, Jay Makwana & Jeff Robinson at JAE Racing, and Marc Taylor at Tencate.

Special thanks to Last Line Security Solutions, Centaur Floor Systems LLC, Java Station, and Jodi Thomas

We greatly appreciate the support we are receiving from local people and businesses like Jodi Thomas, Giovanni Vigna at Last Line, John Donati with Centaur Floor Systems LLC, and David Bozzini at Java Station.

Big thanks to Specialty Crane and Rigging, M&J Engineering and Precision Auto Body and Painting

We had another successful day of fundraising and would like to give a big thanks to the recent supporters of UCSB Racing including: Seth Hammond at Specialty Crane and Rigging, Monte Rook at M&J Engineering and John and Martha at Precision Auto Body & Painting.

Thanks to Jim Hall and the team at Schafer Driveline llc. for donating our transaxle!!

This unit is outfitted with forward, neutral, and reverse which will allow us to get out of sticky situations. The final drive contains a limited-slip type differential that will provide torque to both wheels as needed but, unlike a locked or "spooled" differential, also allows the tires to rotate at different speeds as necessary.

Team Meeting with Ken

A UCSB Racing team member had one of the pamphlets hanging out of his pocket and caught the attention of a local enthusiast. Ken seemed to immediately recognize the benefits of a dedicated Baja program at UCSB and will be assisting us in reaching our goals. He also donated two Bell Helmets and treated us to breakfast.

Thanks Ken!
Our Fundraising material is being printed with a little help from VeerOut and Engineering Development is working on a donor contact list.

Hello and welcome to UCSB Racing!

This site is under construction so please bear with us while we get everything together. A quick note: We are in the final stages of writing our fundraising proposal for our 2014 Baja SAE capstone project.
